*Around 5 months later*
These past two days, things have been tense. A rogue pack of wolves was spotted right outside of our territory. Everyone has been on edge and alert, wanting to make sure our pack was protected.
Everyone was doing their share having increased patrol, especially during the night. We kept the kids inside until we knew things were safe for everyone. I felt my heart ache because Minho and Soraya both had no idea what was going on and kept asking about why they weren’t going to school and meet their friends.
The boys have been even more tense. They wanted to protect our family, Jimin was not leaving my side and besides him, there were always two others with us, not to mention others from the pack who could not do patrol.
Today, it was Hoseok and Jungkook staying with me along with Huening Kai and Alex. Alex was only thirteen which is why he was not allowed to do patrol. Taehyung had been insistent that patrol members had to be over sixteen. He did not want to place any kid in danger.
I looked at Alex who was pacing around vigilantly. I smiled as I remembered how we had saved him three years ago when he was only ten years old. He was a kid, orphaned because of a rogue pack which probably explained why he was so tensed right now.
I looked at the other side as I saw Huening Kai sitting on the bench, still alert but looking down. I sighed as I walked next to him. He gasped as he looked up and saw me.
‘Luna, you should be inside,’ he said quickly but I shook my head and sat next to him.
‘I feel suffocated inside Huening Kai and besides, I’m still technically in the house lines. I’m just sitting in my house’s front porch,’ I said.
‘Yeah. Sorry Luna, I didn’t mean to be so rude,’ he said but I shook my head.
‘You weren’t. You were just looking out for me,’ I said. ‘You’re upset though. What’s wrong?’ I asked.
‘It’s nothing,’ he said, shaking his head. I sighed and grabbed his hand in mine and squeezed.
‘I have known you long enough Huening Kai. I know how to read your emotions. I can tell when you’re happy or upset or angry. So, tell me what’s wrong, please,’ I said.
‘I just… I feel useless Luna,’ he said, making me look at him confused. ‘You know I share my house with those other four. I love them as if they were my brothers but while they are out there patrolling, I am here. Sure, you can say I am “protecting” you but we know that’s a lie. I’m here because I’m a freak with a limp who can’t do much in a fight,’ he said, sounding irritated.
‘Hey don’t say that about yourself Huening Kai. You’re not useless and you’re definitely not just a freak with a limp,’ I said, squeezing his hand.
‘I don’t know Luna. Tell me, what am I good at hmm?’ he asked and I sighed.
‘You’re good up here Huening Kai,’ I said pointing to his brain. ‘Do you think I did not hear you help Namjoon and Taehyung devise the patrol layouts and timings?’ I asked.
‘Anyone could do that,’ he said with a shrug. I shook my head and sighed loudly.
‘Really? Because it’s you I heard telling Namjoon about the passage they had to be careful of or the secret safe passages underneath us,’ I said.
‘I don’t know Luna. I wish I could do more. I wish I could fight like the others without posing bigger risks to the pack. Sometimes, sometimes I think my pack did well to abandon me,’ he said with a sniff.
‘No, no never say that. They were wrong to leave you behind because they lost a gem. The good thing is, we got you instead,’ I said with a smile which made him smile. ‘Now, can you give me a smile?’ I asked.
‘Sure Luna,’ he said as he smiled. ‘Your belly is getting quite big huh?’ he said as he pointed towards it.
‘Yep,’ I said with a smile as I caressed my baby bump. ‘Minho and Soraya keep wanting to touch it and poke it and the boys aren’t much better,’ I said.
‘Can’t blame them. A new pup always brings happiness in a pack,’ he said. ‘I can’t wait until I meet my own mate and have my own little pups,’ he said.
‘Well, from what I’ve seen of you with Minho and Soraya, you’d definitely make a good father Huening Kai,’ I said.
‘You really think so?’ he asked and I nodded. Suddenly, I felt a kick and I could not help but wince slightly. ‘Are you okay Luna?’ he asked, sounding worried.
‘Yeah. Pup just kicked. Do you…do you want to feel?’ I asked. His eyes lit up as he nodded. He reached his hand but it trembled, causing me to laugh. ‘You’re just like Taehyung when I was pregnant for the first time. He was always so careful, scared he’ll hurt me or the baby,’ I said as I took his hand in mine and placed it on my belly.
I felt my baby move and then kick, forcing Huening Kai to gasp loudly. ‘Wow that’s a kick!’ he exclaimed, causing me to laugh. ‘Does it hurt Luna?’ he asked but I shrugged.
‘Not always. It depends. Mostly it hurts if it’s been constant, like one kick after the other,’ I explained as he nodded.
‘Ohh there it is again,’ he said as he leaned closer. ‘Hi baby, it’s uncle Huening Kai here,’ he said with a chuckle just as I heard footsteps.
I looked up to see Jimin, Hoseok and Jungkook approaching with the kids and a tray with drinks. Huening Kai smiled as he moved away, only to be replaced by Jimin who instantly put his hands on my belly.
‘Is my baby giving Mama a hard time?’ he asked as Jungkook set the tray down and handed me a glass of lemonade.
‘Just a few kicks to cheer up Uncle Huening Kai, right baby?’ I asked as I rubbed my belly with my free hand. I could have sworn the baby understood as I felt another kick.
‘Ohh seems like we’re in agreement,’ Jimin said with a chuckle while I took a few sips from the lemonade.
‘You should be inside love,’ Jungkook said as he sat down on the ground right in front of me. Soraya quickly scampered on him while Hoseok sat on the ground and Minho climbed on him.
‘I just needed some air,’ I said with a pout. ‘You know how much I love being outside and being stuck in the house is driving me insane,’ I admitted.
‘We know love but it’s not safe until we make sure the rogue pack is not a threat,’ Hoseok said.
‘Besides, it’s pretty hot out here and you shouldn’t spent too much time in the sun hm?’ Jungkook said while I nodded.
‘Yeah, yeah, I know you’re right,’ I said as I continued to drink, finishing it. ‘Can we spend just five more minutes? Then we can go in,’ I said.
‘Okay princess,’ Hoseok said as he came and kissed the top of my head, causing Minho and Soraya to giggle loudly.
‘LOOK OUT!!’ I heard Alex scream at the top of his lungs, forcing all of us to look at him. I gasped loudly as I saw two wolves jump on him. One of the wolves seemed to almost smirk before he bit into Alex’s neck.
‘NOOO!!’ I screamed just as Alex screamed and thrashed.
‘Jimin, Huening Kai, take them inside, NOW!’ Jungkook said as he and Hoseok jumped into the air, transforming into wolves and running towards Alex.
Soraya was crying loudly while Minho was hugging her tightly. I felt myself gasping for air before I felt hands shaking me.
‘Baby, baby please focus. I know you’re scared and worried but please, focus on me,’ Jimin said. I looked at him and nodded even though my body trembled.
I let him help me as he picked up Minho while Huening Kai picked up Soraya. Jimin led us towards the house but I could hear the loud growling and fighting taking place.
